BROKEN: Houston Chronicle comics

Sherman's Lagoon, Popeye, Dennis the Menace, and any other comics hosted on Houston Chronicle are now broken. They do all have new links from here, but it appears that they now omit Sunday comics.

It seems that most sites get them from ComicsKingdom now (I've found only one other that doesn't, and it also omits Sunday comics); theoretically you could watch the ComicsKingdom directory where all the files are stored, but I'd suspect that's a good way to get blocked; and slagoon.com is a month or two behind and not in colour.

The best solution would be to make the crawler JavaScript-aware, but I assume that's out of your hands.

A second solution would be to not check the site at all, but just mark the comic as updated at midnight each day, but I suspect that's also not within your capabilities.

A third is watching the ComicsKingdom directory where all the files are stored, but as I said that feels like an invitation for them to block the Comic-Nation crawler.

The best possibility I can think of at the moment is to use one of the sites that doesn't go through ComicsKingdom (maybe even slagoon.net in the case of Sherman's Lagoon, or the updated Houston Chronicle pages) as the update URL for checking, but make the "official front page" URL point to one of the sites that does go through ComicsKingdom so that I can get the update on Monday and then check back to see the Sunday comic.

There are a lot of ComicsKingdom-based sites around, for example Seattle-Pi (all the actual comics are under that inconspicuous "choose a comic" in the purple box).

Found a much simpler reg_exp then they were using before.
(.*?)
Thanks for the heads up.

It's nice that they're working now, but what did you think of the suggestion of changing the "front page" to point to a different site? As previously mentioned, Houston Chronicle is omitting the Sunday comics for some reason, whereas Comics Kingdom is not.

True, but I would rather not mess around with something like that unless it was for the sunday strip. Personnelly, I don't like all the flash that site uses.

I'll try to lock onto the sunday strips, but don't see any reason to change things over if nothing is wrong with the other sites' links for now.

Well, there are a number of others besides Seattle-pi (though they probably all use the same Flash), but my point is Houston Chronicle doesn't post the Sunday strips at all.

I know of Gocomics, Seattle-pi, Houston Chronicle and a few others. Them I know how to do. Comic Kingdom is a real bugger I can't figure out.

I'll just do what I can.
