Suggestion List and Naming/Sorting Conventions

Is there any chance that the suggestions list will be worked through anytime soon?

I suggest starting from the bottom, deleting mirror duplicates, and stripping out any leading or trailing non-alphanumeric characters.

In addition, I suggest that any comics with the name "The <something>" or "A(n) <something>" in the database be renamed to "<something>, The" and "<something>, A(n)". This is a more natural sort order, since leading articles are often ignored when sorting... and it would make it easier to find a comic in the list.

(Yes, I know there's a search, but if you know the first letter but not the exact spelling, browsing the list would be more successful.)

That naming convention you mentioned in the second part is the unofficial rule when it comes to such lists. It would also help remove some duplicates there.

The first part will drastically lessen the number of comics there. HOWEVER, some of the comics have things like + and - as part of their names to differentiate themselves from other comics with names that are otherwise the same. Just be careful with that.

Another option for proper sorting would be to add a Prefix field to the database which is printed in front of the title when the comic is displayed but ignored for sorting. And then move all of the "A ", "An ", "The ", and "The Adventures of " to that field. And maybe then people will stop re-suggesting "Dr. McNinja".

Other options are to have a numeric field saying how many characters to skip when sorting or an Alternative Title field (both are used in the MARC format).

I've no problem with including symbols in the name, as long as they're not the first character; and I was mainly recommending the removal of "framing" characters. (eg .:Comic Name:.)

Sorry to have to tell you this, but those symbols I mentioned are sometimes at the start. Some examples from Smack Jeeves are "$5 fate", "& to love me" and \303\243\302\201\342\200\242\303\243\302\201\302\260\303\243\302\201\302\217 Those are jst the first three comics alphabetically and have all updated in the last month.

Characters thate are just there to frame the words we can do without, but these other ones have to be considered and dealt with.

So rewrite them in Roman characters: "Five Dollar Fate" or even "5 Dollar Fate", "And to love me", and "Sabaku" (assuming Wiktionary is correct on the Romaji spelling of that).

Is that last one even in English, though?

Meh, I would prefer to keep the naming conventions chosen by the creator whenever possible; except for the framing characters, those are just ego bloat to move the name up alphabetical lists.

I don't see how it would be any loss to replace a symbol with a word...

And when someone looks for the original title?
This will encourage dublication.

Words, in their most basic are symbols for other things. Sometimes a symbol will have empthasis that the relating word does not.

Sometimes people do not know what the symbol means, like that third one I listed. And no; I don't think it is in english at all.

What we need is a page for these comics to be listed in. That will solve the problem without creating new ones, as far as I can tell.

If anyone can see a problem with that? If so tell me here. I will also like to hear any other ideas.

Yeah, it shouldn't be too hard to create a page that lists all entries not being on any other lists.

I've made the page that lists all the comics that start with irregular characters. We will have to wait for Ron to apply my updates, assuming they don't break the site (The computer I did them on exploded after sitting under a blanket).

Current time on users comics page and a working insert link to comic have also been done, as well as a newest comics comics page. And the comic genesis comic method has been changed to one that works, and you should be able to use it as the method on most comicspress comics and probably a bunch of others as well. That's all I got around to doing, I think.

Thanks for all the hard work, Meeowth. Wish I knew any programming.

But such a page shouldn't include Japanese names, really. Japanese names should have their own set of pages, sorted in normal Japanese sort order.

Though, if there's very few Japanese names, one page for all would do.

I think they can create new pages as the need arises. At the moment we are just looking at names that do not start with alpha-numeric characters. If we start listing languages that does not use them on each on a different page, where do we stop?

If it becomes a problem latter, it can be dealt with then. In the meantime they have the system set up for it, it gives them time to handle it without so much preasure to act, and the other comes are dealt with and are out of the way.

Two things to remember when dealing with problems like this is to 1) be able to see what may be needed in the future, and be ready to deal with it, and 2) know when to let things be for a time.

Remember both of them and you can deal with problems with minimun stress.

This thread was supposed to be a hint to start adding comics, as well as a suggestion on the naming conventions. If you could activate, say, the bottom 15 comics on the suggestion list, that would make me happy.

Anyway, I just added a few, and there are some things I must say.

First, Soup by Alun Clewe and Soup by MyifanW have the same name, but are completely unrelated. I wasn't sure what to do about that, so I just decided to add a * and leave it up to the administrators.

Second, Invictus has no main page displaying the comic as of this posting; you'll probably need to capture the ID number in the Latest link.

I came across that problem with names being the same for totally different comics, and asked about it. Someone recommended putting something like Soup (via Drunk Duck) where appropiate. You will notice a few suck cases in the lists.

I admit a few ARE mirrors, but others are not.

Well, that's one solution. Another is to mention the authors name like Soup by Alun Clewe and Soup by MyifanW.

This section has REALLY wondered around a lot!

Hm... actually, I prefer the idea of mentioning the author, since the same comic can exist on multiple hosts.

I've put the bottom 30 through the gauntlet, any other specific requests?
